Routine dental treatment is not covered by standard health insurance. Cover comes through a corporate or group OPD plan, an OPD rider, accident cover, or a procedure that requires hospitalisation.

Can I claim a root canal on insurance?

Only if you hold an OPD plan or rider that includes dental. A root canal on its own does not qualify under a standard hospitalisation policy.

For most patients the honest answer is no — but four routes do pay, and it is worth knowing which applies to you before you book.

This is the question we are asked most often, and patients are usually given a vague version of the answer. Here is the direct one: standard Indian health insurance does not cover routine dentistry. Cleanings, fillings, root canals, crowns and anything cosmetic are almost always paid out of pocket.

The four routes that do pay

Corporate or group OPD plans — the most common route. Many employers include an annual outpatient allowance of ₹5,000–₹25,000 that dental treatment can be claimed against.
An OPD rider bought on top of a personal health policy — you must have opted in when buying; it is rarely included by default.
Accident cover — where teeth are damaged in an accident, reconstruction is usually payable under the base health policy.
Hospitalisation — procedures needing admission, such as jaw surgery or surgical extraction under general anaesthesia, can qualify as a cashless claim.

What this means in practice

If you hold only a standard individual or family floater policy with no OPD rider, assume you are paying for dental treatment yourself. That is not a reason to delay care — it is a reason to get a written estimate first, which we give every patient before treatment starts.

Government schemes

ESI covers dental treatment for insured workers at ESI facilities, and CGHS covers central government employees and pensioners at empanelled providers. Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY covers dental procedures only where they form part of a covered hospitalisation package, not routine care.

The practical alternative: EMI

For treatment above ₹10,000 — implants, aligners, full-mouth rehabilitation — no-cost EMI over three, six or nine months on a debit or credit card is what most of our patients actually use. It spreads the cost without adding interest.
