How Often Do You Really Need a Dental Cleaning?

The 'every 6 months' rule isn't for everyone. Here's how to know what's right for your mouth.

The famous 'every 6 months' recommendation comes from a 1950s toothpaste ad — not from research. The right interval depends entirely on your individual risk profile.

Every 3 months

If you have a history of gum disease (periodontitis), heavy tartar buildup, diabetes, or are a smoker. More frequent cleanings prevent disease from progressing.

Every 6 months

The default for most adults with healthy gums and average risk. This catches new cavities early and keeps tartar manageable.

Every 9–12 months

If you have excellent oral hygiene, no history of cavities or gum disease, and low-risk habits — some adults genuinely only need yearly cleanings. We'll tell you honestly when that's the case.

What a cleaning actually includes

  • Ultrasonic scaling to remove hard tartar.
  • Hand instrumentation along the gumline.
  • Polish to remove surface stains.
  • Fluoride treatment (optional but recommended).
  • Oral cancer screening.
  • Bite-wing X-rays once a year for most adults.
